How to Prevent Reading Loss Through Summer Reading

Over the summer students can lose a substantial amount of reading comprehension skills. It is often the students who already struggle during the school year who will have the greatest amount of loss over the summer months, causing them to become further behind. One way to remedy this problem is to engage your child in summer reading. Reading over the summer can help to maintain and even strengthen your child’s literacy skills. When looking for books, check out your school district’s website; many supply students with a summer reading list or recommendations for appropriate grade level material.

Here are a few tips that can help initiate and support your child’s summer reading goal:

  • allow your child to choose the books to ensure high interest
  • take the books on the go, you never know when you might get a minute to read
  • to save on cost, visit your local library, many now have Ebooks you can download
  • set a reading goal for your child as well as a fun reward for reaching it
  • practice your child’s oral reading by having them read their books aloud
  • read aloud to your child to model fluent reading and build vocabulary
  • engage in your child’s reading by asking questions about their books, focus on plot, theme, setting and characters.
  • visit the library for ideas, they will have book recommendations by genre and level
  • create a set time for reading each day that will help your child reach their goal
